Why does my shower have low water pressure?

By John Whales

Low pressure usually results when you've been forced to turn on two different plumbing fixtures at the same time, whether they are the outside garden hose, the kitchen/bathroom sink, the toilet, or even the shower. Although your pressure may be sufficient when only one fixture is operational, you'll definitely notice a drop in water flow when the second fixture comes into use.

Low water pressure generally will cause problems all over your home. So, if you seem to only have low pressure in the bathroom, you should check the showerhead to see if it is blocked, or whether there is some sort of flow regulator installed that is not working properly.

Otherwise when demand for water is high (such as in the morning or early evenings) pressure can be lower than during the rest of the day. There can also be problems during dry spells when people use hosepipes or sprinklers to water their gardens.

Other causes of low pressure can include:

pumping equipment can fail or be insufficient to pump the water effectively, pipes can be blocked or too narrow for the increasing demand

What can I do for my shower to make it more powerful?

Without spending a huge amount of money on new equipment - pumps, tanks, completely new pipes (wider) it's difficult to achieve much of a change. Looking at the shower head itself, there is not one anywhere that can actually increase your water pressure, so don't accept this from anyone. There are some showerheads on the market that can increase the force of the water, which can improve your shower experience, but the lay man can find it tricky to track down the right shower head for their set up. Purchasing a regular shower head and removing the flow regulator does not achieve a better flow! If you really want to improve your shower experience and increase flow rate:

'You have to buy a shower head that is engineered from the drawing board for low pressure. Don't fall for a simple sales pitch that says that a shower head will work for low pressure. 99% of the products that claim to give you a better shower with low water pressure do absolutely nothing other than empty your wallet.'

A specialist eco shower head company called Ecocamel have spent years creating specially designed products for low water flow. If you find that none of the common suggestions in this article have helped your shower performance, we can offer a solution. By riffling air into the water flow (inJET technology), it causes turbulence within the flow of water and gives the water a higher velocity.
