I bought this fan to help cool off when I am out playing cards; it really works well, and is also a conversation piece because nobody knows what the hell it is. Very happy with the purchase, $20 would be a great price though! I live in California and although the weather is normally nice all year around, it can still get brutally hot at times. If there was a REAL portable air-conditioner I would definitely buy that, but having searched endlessly to try and find something like that with no success (message me if you know of any) I found this unit.
The handy cooler is much better because it's automatic (no more pumping the water bottle) and the cooling effect is great. It's not the best when it comes to sharing it, but it really does work having it right next to your neck.
These fans are not easy to use, they are cumbersome, and they do not cool the area any more than the little hand fans they give out as prizes at the county fair. Some will read this and think I am disgruntled because I paid $100 and cannot get my money back, but that is not the case.
We all have to educate ourselves. The USB adapter is something I use much more than I thought I would. We are planning to use it this coming up summer again when we go on our family trip. Now that the summer is in full force, I've gotten fed up and instead of turning down the thermostat only to have it turned up after an hour by my colleagues, I decided to buy a fan. It requires 4 AA batteries, which took most of its weight, or USB powered (cable provided). The product also comes with a small water bottle used to moist the filter.
They figure you can go from thirty minutes to three hours on a "full" sponge, depending on your environment. I have told the company that makes the Handy Cooler that they need to introduce a shoulder holster, so you can wear it around and use it hands-free. I like the fan. It does cool you off. It sounds good but how anyone can give this product higher than one star is beyond me. It has minimal cooling and air circulating capability. To feel anything at all, you have to hold it less than a foot away and on bare skin. I can't afford one of those cooling nail devices at the manicure parlors but the strength of a table fan is too strong and often makes the nail paint buckle while drying. The handy cooler is not flimsy and therefore sits there in a very sturdy manner and dries my nails, once my nails are almost completely dry, I can adjust the air settings to a low breeze, perfect!
Like most offices, the temperature goes up and down and this is like a personal thermostat. It's on the expensive side for a USB fan so treat it as a luxury item for the geeks. While I was skeptical due to previous disappointments in portable fans, this one lives up to its promises! The only inconvenience is the need for water which is solved somewhat by the included water bottle. We got 2 for the family and so far so good. Description they provide actually matches the product which doesn't always happen and it seems durable. But it's just a tiny battery operated fan with a sponge filter. Why it costs almost $50"
