Origin of dwarf rabbits

Dwarf rabbits are the tiniest variety of domestic bunnies, which are said to have originated from Europe. They are the 3rd most common domestic pets in America and also The United Kingdom, after cats and dogs. They're sweet and adorable, and are generally docile animals. One thing to keep in mind before choosing a dwarf rabbit is that there are natural and also false bred dwarf rabbits available in the market.

The false bred dwarf rabbits are products of hybridization and look larger than the purebred ones.

Beginnings and Background

Dwarf Rabbits can also be known as the Netherland Dwarf Bunnies because they were first found in Netherlands, in 1900s. They're the descendants of the little Polish bunny breed who were inter bred with the little wild rabbits. In 1948, the Dwarf bunnies were introduced in The United Kingdom. Later in the 1960s, the Dwarf breed was introduced to United States and was accepted by the American Rabbit Breeder's Association in 1969.

Nature and Training

Dwarf rabbits are said to be soft and obedient animals. The 1st litter of the Polish and wild rabbits consisted of young ones that had an unpredictable and crazy habits. Constant and selective reproduction have made these bunnies delicate and docile creatures. However, you should know that every Dwarf rabbit has its own character. Dwarf bunnies enjoy playing and are friendly towards both, adults and children.

Like all domestic animals, it is important to train the Dwarf rabbit from the beginning. They should be taught to make use of the litter cages to relieve themselves. You have to be strict with them to make them listen to you. But, avoid being severe, because it may scare or confuse them. They develop incorrect behavior when they become adults. To avoid this kind of behavior, it's advisable that you sterilize your pet.
