Soft or Hard Dog Food?

By Seram Marquis

So now that you have made the decision to feed your puppy natural puppy food there is another relevant dog food decision you still have to make: which is better, soft or hard dog food? It may seem like a trivial decision, but it really isn't because nutrition is such an important factor in dog health issues such as scratching, itching and dog hot spot.

Dogs certainly enjoy eating soft wet canned dog food. Soft dog food offers your dog a more natural and aromatic type of food compared to dry kibble in a bag.

You might be surprised to hear that dogs don't care what their food looks like - to them, it's how it tastes and smells that's important. But most dogs seem to consider soft canned food the ultimate in tastiness, after "people food," anyway. Perhaps that's because it smells the most aromatic.

On the contrary, you might have heard that dry food and other chewy items are important for your pet's dental health. That certainly is no myth- your growing puppy definitely needs some chewing action.

If you feed your dog exclusively on canned dog food, you need to supplement with something to chew on. But it doesn't necessarily have to be dry dog food. If you don't want to feed your dog dry dog food, you can use dog treats such as dog biscuits. In addition, your dog can exercise her jaw with chew toys. That way your dog can get a regular teeth and jaw workout.

On your regular visit to the veterinarian for checkups your vet will examine your dog's teeth and will inform you if there is any issue that demands immediate attention and correcting with a different type of dog food, more opportunities to chew, or even dietary supplements.

Hard materials are needed by dogs for chewing. This is how they give their powerful jaw muscles a workout and strengthen their teeth. It is a way for them to take care of their teeth. Hard chew items also help in loosening the build up of plaque and tartar.

It is essential that you choose the best natural puppy food, since this sets the stage and maintains your puppy's good dental health as well as nutritional requirements. If you would rather feed your dog wet, soft and tasty can foods it will be just fine, but do make sure that your dog also has access to things that he can give a good chew.
